CONCEPTUAL PRACTICES: PHOTOGRAPHIC OBSERVATION, MEMORY & IDENTITY
MAKING PRACTICES ACCORDION FOLD, BOOKMAKING
When neighbourhoods change,
what gets left behind?
Joo Chiat in 18 Sequences is a visual reflection on memory, place, and transformation. Once a quiet neighbourhood briefly tied to my childhood, Joo Chiat has since evolved into a trendy cultural enclave. Through 18 original photographs, I document the street’s shifting textures and quiet contradictions - older façades, renovation works, and new shops that carry the tension between preservation and renewal. Rooted in personal memory and photographic observation, the work traces a personal geography of a place in transition. The final outcome is a hand-assembled accordion-fold publication, printed, scored, and pasted by hand.
